a Fall/Winter Faculty-Led Program:

Global Studies 298: Immigration and Integration in Jordan
Amman, Irbid, & Aqaba, Jordan

On-campus course: 2nd 8 weeks of Fall 2016, Wednesdays 5-7pm in the Foreign Languages Building, room G18

Course Description

This seminar will give you astrong understanding of global issues of immigration and integration through the case study of a particular region. You will investigate the social and political landscape of the Middle East, focusing on Jordan.

This course draws from interdisciplinary materials and would be of particular interest to those pursuing majors in political science, anthropology, history, architecture and archeology.
Students will visit Roman ruins, Petra, the Dead Sea, refugee camps, universiteis and Parliament.

Eman Saadah is the Director of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Program, Director and Language Coordinator of Arabic, an Advisor for the Minor in Arabic Studies, and a Senior Lecturer of Arabic. 




Group Flight: As part of the Program Fee, LAS International Programs will organize a group flight for this course, as long as there are more than 10 participants. All group flights will be departing from and arriving at O'Hare Airport. Very few exceptions are made for opting out of the group flight.

Program Academics & Eligibility

Classes carry three hours of college credit and are taught by U of I faculty.  All Global Studies Courses Abroad are designated as GLBL 298.  The courses begin during the second eight weeks of the Fall 2016 term, and include two weeks "in the field" abroad.

Meals: about 2 meals per day will be provided to students. Meals are provided in housing facilities as well as from local restaurants.

Program Fees
If the Illinois Abroad Office nominates or accepts you to the study abroad program you have applied for, you will have 1 week to change your status of accepted to committed. If you withdraw after committing to the program, there is a non-refundable $300 withdrawal fee. Depending on when you withdraw, there could also be additional non-refundable fees. 


2016-17 estimated PROGRAM FEE: $2,900-$3,150 (based on 12-18 committed students - see below for overall total)
2015-16 estimated PROGRAM FEE: $3,112 (based on 18 committed students-see below for overall total)

Total cost is ESTIMATED and is BEFORE scholarships.

Program Fee Includes: Round-trip international airfare, housing and 2-3 daily meals, orientation, program excursions (to Petra, Wadi Rum, Zarqa, Irbid, Madaba and Aqaba), and international insurance

Program Fee Does NOT Include: Personal expenses (est. $175), visa fees (est. $60 for U.S. citizens), some meals (est. $100), passport cost (if applicable)

2016-17 estimated TOTAL including off-budget expenses and Program Fee: $3,235-$3,485 (based on 12-18 committed students)
2015-16 estimated TOTAL including off-budget expenses and Program Fee: $3,372 (based on 18 committed students)

Scholarship Opportunities

LAS Faculty-Led Course Abroad Scholarship:
All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences receive an automatic scholarship toward the program cost.  The amount varies depending on the program destination.
