OVERVIEW: ARCH-LATIN AMERICA STUDIO
LOCATION: SAnto Domingo, Dominican Republic, Fall 2022
The Illinois School of Architecture (ISoA) is one of the leading architecture schools in the world. Part of this merited reputation is due to its ability to undertake internationally situated architectural and urban design studios. The Dominican Republic is a vibrant island nation with a rich sociocultural history that includes pre-Hispanic First Nations, Spanish colonial acculturation, and more recently, one of the Caribbean’s most robust democracies. Over the last 100 years, the migration of Dominicans to the United States has produced a strong transnational link and contributed to the rich tapestry of urban life in several major American cities. All told, the Dominican Republic is an extraordinary opportunity to explore, through architectural and urban design, the process of placemaking.
The studio will focus on a site near the heart of the Dominican Republic’s second-largest city, Santiago de Caballeros (SC). In the studio, students will consider site-specific conditions, history, and real estate development, i.e., client expectations and market-based programming, urban design siting, massing and integration, and Architectural typologies, along with social, economic, and environmental sustainability strategies. Caribbean Cinemas, has generously offered to fund the studio and publish a booklet with the student’s studio work.
