Program Specific Information
Champaign and Urbana http://www.visitchampaigncounty.org/are two conjoined cities located in central Illinois. Together they have a population of approximately 120,000. The major feature in town is the University, where you will be spending most of your time. The cities are built around the university and many stores and restaurants around campus cater almost exclusively to students. As such, there are many things for students to do.
Located conveniently near Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN and St. Louis, MO, Urbana-Champaign’s easy access to these larger cities allows students additional shopping, dining and entertainment venues for weekends and breaks.
Where you will study
The University of Illinois was founded in 1867 as an industrial college. It has since grown to encompass 17 colleges and has a population of 44,000 students, 32,000 undergraduates and 12,000 graduates. UIUC has over 1000 registered student organizations, with many specifically geared towards the engineering disciplines.
The College of Engineering is consistently highly ranked in both US and world rankings. In particular Computer Science, Materials Science, Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering are extremely well-ranked.
Facilities available to students include a world-class library system, state-of-the-art labs, two extensive recreation facilities, an ice skating rink, multiple museums and theaters.
The public transportation system in Urbana-Champaign will take you almost anywhere in the area that you would like to go.
Courses
The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign cannot guarantee enrollment in any specific course, so it is important for exchange students to be as flexible as possible when considering UIUC as their study abroad desintation. College of Engineering exchange students cannot take courses offered by the College of Business-NO EXCEPTIONS.
Language
All courses are taught in English.
Exchange students are responsible for arranging their own housing. International Programs in Engineering does not reserve housing for students. Information options include:
Undergraduate and Graduate Residence Halls
These properties are traditional dormitories for college students. Typically, two students share a room. In some cases, you may be assigned to a suite, where there would be three or more students to a room. Sherman and Daniels halls are the only two Graduate Residence Halls and are geared towards undergraduate and graduate students.

Private Certified Housing
An alternative to the University Residence Halls are Private Certified Housing. These halls are managed by external property companies, but have been "approved" by the University of Illinois. The rooms in these halls are typically bigger, but are more expensive. Several of these are also religiously affiliated.

All College of Engineering exchange students receive a tuition waiver and some fee waivers. However, there are some mandatory fees that exchange students are responsible for paying, including

All international students are required to obtain a visa before entering the United States. Upon acceptance to the exchange program, you will be issued a Notice of Admission and a DS-2019 in your admission packet. These documents will allow you to obtain a J1 visa for the duration of your stay.
