GLBL 298 India

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Study Abroad Office present
a Fall/Winter Faculty-Led Program:

Global Studies 298: Globalization and Language and Culture of India
Delhi & Jabalpur, India

On-campus meetings:  Wednesdays, starting October 15 - December 20, 7 - 8:30, Building/Room TBD

Course Description

You will study and experience the cultural and linguistic diversities of India and understand how a multicultural and multilingual India is being impacted by globalization, both economic and cultural. The course will enable you to experience the three distinct realities of India – rural/tribal, urban, and metropolitan.  While in India, you will get opportunities to interact with local students, people, officials, and professionals from diverse fields. Those interested in or pursuing research on specific topics related to the culture and languages of India will be encouraged to focus on their chosen interest or research in their required paper and poster for this course.

Group Flight: As part of the Program Fee, the SAO will organize a group flight for this course, as long as there are more than 10 participants. All group flights will be departing from and arriving at O'Hare Airport. Very few exceptions are made for opting out of the group flight.

Program Academics & Eligibility

Classes carry three hours of college credit and are taught by U of I faculty.  All Global Studies Courses Abroad are designated as GLBL 298.  The courses begin during the second eight weeks of the Fall 2014 term, and include two weeks "in the field" abroad.

Program Fee

If the Study Abroad Office nominates or accepts you to the study abroad program you have applied for, the Study Abroad Office will bill your Illinois student account a nonrefundable $305 advance fee.  This fee will be deducted from the final cost of your program fees; however, please note that this fee is not refundable should you decide to withdraw from the study abroad program.

2014-15 estimated PROGRAM FEE: $3,550 - $3,650 

*Fees are subject to change due to exchange rate fluctuations and the number of participants. 

Total cost is ESTIMATED and is BEFORE scholarships.

Program Fee Includes: Round-trip airfare (Chicago-Delhi), domestic airfare (Delhi-Ranchi), airport transfers, housing and meals, orientation programs, program excursions, and international health insurance.

Program Fee Does Not Include: Personal expenses while abroad (est. $300) and visa costs (est. $100) if applicable. These are off-budget costs that are estimated and will be expenses that come out of your own pocket.

Scholarship Opportunities

LAS Faculty-Led Course Abroad Scholarship:
All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences receive a scholarship toward the program cost.  The amount varies depending on the program destination. 

Other scholarships:
You should also apply for the Illinois for Illinois (I4I) Study Abroad Undergraduate Scholarship AND the Charles Wert India-Illinois Scholarship (which is an International Programs and Studies Scholarship).  For more information on both of these scholarships and more, click here.  If you are a non-LAS student, be sure to contact your college about any possible scholarship opportunities.
